Beat L.A. (Giants 3, Dodgers 2)

Two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Mohr, the pitcher's spot and Durham due up. I muttered "We could be here for a while." But Mohr ripped a grounder that ate up Beltran at third, then Tiny worked a walk. Rally! Durham watched four balls and up came Cody Ransom, who ripped one up the middle for the win. Pretty sweet.

Woody was snappy again, almost making it through the seventh. Perez matched him step for step. Can the Giants touch this guy at all?

Sickening sight of the night: Bonds grabbing his right hammy after he busted it down the line in the sixth. Hope it's nothing serious.

So can we let Deivi stay at shortstop for now? Hard to believe, but his 2-for-3 sticks him at .289, 30 points higher than Neifi's on-base percentage. Perez, by the way, was the first pinch hitter off the bench tonight, which should tell you there's something horribly wrong with the Giants roster.

I really want to root for Deivi, but two things:

His OBP will only be good compared to Perez. Unbelievably his walk rate is even lower than Pedro "DP" Feliz.

Gaffes. Cruz may have cost the Giants Friday's game against the Sox with his fifth inning error. Is this the guy to have manning the biggest defensive position on a pennant-chasing team?

Don't get me wrong, I loathe Neifi Perez and would rather see a Rey Sanchez revival at short than the pestilence of number 10 in the middle of the infield. Sometimes Pedro Feliz at short doesn't sound so bad, and this is what frightens me.

Hey, I'm no Deivi Cruz fan myself, but when it comes down to a choice of Perez or Cruz, I'm picking Cruz every time.

As for Friday's error, I blame Barry. That's the outfielder's ball all the way, and he became a spectator. I don't think there's a tougher catch in baseball than the one Cruz was trying to make: Over your head, to your backhand side, outfielder maybe/maybe not going to cream you, wind blowing the ball from left to right at about a 45-degree angle to your path ... all that's missing is the moat full of underfed alligators.

Or try hanging it on Tucker, who missed the fly to right. Plenty of goats to go around Friday, but Cruz doesn't make my top three.
