Wi-Fi Whoops

Some things just don't go together. The Mercury News had a reporter see how folks were using the Wi-Fi access at the park yesterday.

Fong, a computer programmer from South San Francisco, had taken his laptop into the glass-enclosed Club level and was checking work e-mail when Barry Bonds smashed home run No. 660 to tie Willie Mays' record. The park went wild.

''I watched it on TV,'' said Fong, still shaking his head. The moral, Kevin? ''Don't take your laptop to the park.''

Serves him right. I was in one of the luxury boxes at the Stick once. I missed a home run when I moved to hang up my jacket. That whole scenario is just wrong. And the Diamondbacks won to clinch the division that night. Served me right.

I know those seats and that arc. I distinctly remember the first home run hit out of Pac Bell, a Barry rainbow into the water. As I recall it came right after a light sprinkle. A thing of beauty watching a splash hit from those seats...
